you are probably thinking this was a weapon from the title of the topic but that is not the case. Simply put, a weather bomb is where the air pressure drops extremely low very fast.
This of course causes extreme weather conditions. Normally, the air pressure is around 32 and will drop to 29 or 28 before a storm.  However, with a weather bomb it drops to around 24 very rapidly.

As a result of the extremely rapid drop in pressure extremely high winds are produced.

This weather bomb in particular caused wind gusts around  231 kpm which knocked out power across parts of the UK.

I can imagine it was pretty bad considering how high the winds were. I was thinking that there might not be many poles standing for sure.

Seems like the worst has passed now. Where I live wasn't hit too much thankfully. I've not heard of any deaths from the storm mercifully, but there has been a bit of damage and of course transport has been affected in places too.

On a side note, the internet seems a little slower than usual I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the storm maybe knocking a few servers offline somewhere?

It is possible that both lines and towers are damaged and you are being redirected to a tower that is farther away as they work on restoring things there.

It is fast becoming unpredictable for sure. Weathermen used to be around 50% wrong and now even with computer models they are barely 20% on target. They just don't know what is going to happen.

You are quite right. The forecasters these days have had billions invested to make sure they can make accurate forecasts - and still they get it wrong - They have satellites, weather ships, weather balloons, super computers etc. what a waste of money.

We may all be just as well off hanging a piece of seaweed outside our doors.

lately, the only thing predictable about the weather is that it is unpredictable.

We have has snow and low temperatures here. I don't know whether it's connected? But we have had internet outages for the past couple of days too. Mostly for just short periods of time, typically an hour or less. But multiple times per day.

Yes it could be. They can cause all kinds of problems with wireless and electronic equipment.

Funny you should say that. The TV keeps going off, it went off 12 times last night in the space of a 90 minute programme. The internet has also been affected though it's been ok for the last couple of days (touchwood)

Yes its been good for the last few days.
The thing to remember is that solar flares affect the entire planet. If we were to have a super large one the world as we know it would be changed. It would destroy enough electrical equipment that no one would have electrical power. One scientist theorized that it would basically put us in the stone age.

Simply put, if every transistor and everything electrical burns out there is simply not enough parts to get things going again.

Well I don't know what it's like over there? But if it's anything like here, the moment that happened, kids these days would be well and truly stuffed. They can't do even simple maths when they leave schools these days unless they use a calculator. In fact many businesses have to advertise for foreign workers to come here and work for them, even though we have high unemployment. Simply because the school leavers are not educated or intelligent enough to meet the businesses standards.

thing is , everything relies on computers and electronics.  Of a truth if the world went one day everything that used an electrical current most people would  probably not know what to do.

In the event of a catastrophic solar flare anything that uses any kind of current or was electrical would not work because it would be fried. This would include :

  • computers
  • cars
  • calculators
  • PC's
  • telephones
  • cook stoves
  • washers
  • dryers
  • factories

  • water pumps that pump water in city limits,
  • gas pumps that pump air for heating

This is just to name a few.  Basically anything that uses and conducts any form of electrical current
would not work. Board games and reading would become the new planetary past time as well as figuring out ways to store food.
It would be a mess.

In our area , weather bombs are the least of our worries. It can be 90F one minute and then 50 minutes later be well below freezing , snowing, sleeting, raining, and have thunder going on all at the same time.
So for our area, you pack both shorts and plenty of emergency supplies in the car because not even the weathermen can keep up. They are getting better at guessing lately but we will see how long that lasts.
