About The Redback

The Redback Latrodectushasseltii
One of the most feared spiders in Australia (and well known) is the Redback. It is commonly called the redback because of the single stripe down the middle of it back. Its scientific name is Latrodectus hasselti.

Where is it?

At one time this spider was only found in Australia but can now be found in New Zealand,  United Arab Emirates, Belgium,New Guinea, Phillippines, India, and Japan.

how poisonous is it

The female carries an average of .09 mg of venom. However, the LD50 is only .009 mg /kg  which  although is 45 times less than its cousin the black widow (.002 mg/kg) makes this spider one to avoid like the plague

All of the widow spiders (latrodectus) are quite shy
