Naegleria fowleri is a single-celled organism that lives in warm, fresh waters throughout the world in rivers, ponds and lakes. It is known as "the brain eating amoeba"
This deadly amoeba is found in non chlorinated waters and infects people by getting in the nose. Once there it then enters the body. Once inside the body it attacks the nerves that control smell and taste. Eventually will enter the blood stream where it consumes (eats) both red and white blood cells as well as any tissue (nasty!). Eventually it makes it way to the brain. Once there it feasts on the brain tissue.
Now remember this is an amoeba so it is important to note that as they feed they reproduce. So a single amoeba can cause quite a problem.
Now as this thing dines on brain tissue it can give a person some nasty symptoms including severe frontal headache, fever, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, altered mental state, hallucinations.
Eventually the person enters a coma which is usually followed by death.
Needless to say there is a 95% chance that there will be no recovery.
