Its happened before
Its no secret that accidents at nuclear power plants have happened before. Some good examples are Chernobyl in Russia, the 3 mile island in the USA , and recently , not one , but several reactors at the same time in Japan.

The effects
The effects of such a diaster are very far reaching as it literally pumps harmful radiation and radioactive particles into the atmosphere, whitch would result in contaminated food, drinking water, ect,.. but the responses of some governement agencies speciffically , the EPA raised the levels of what is considered an acceptable limit of radiation.

how much is too much?
Just how much radiation is too much ? Well, guess what, the levels of whats considered safe and acceptable has been increased to about 3000 times what it should be because of the problems in Japan and the truth (still) is that anything over .1 m/R is quite harmful regardless of what governement agencies claimed. However, the idea of feeding disinformation to the public just to ease their fear a little just doesn't quite cut it with me. As far as I know they have not ever lowered the amounts but instead have repeatably raised them.

Interestingly enough, radioactive contamination of blue fin tuna fish which had traveled from Japan to the California coast was finally made public today.
Of course the "official" word from American and Japanese officials is that its perfectly safe - theres not enough to hurt a fly. Only problem is that a fly has a higher tolerance for radiation than a human.

I've said it before and will say it again: There is no such thing as a safe amount of radiation.
